Google is planning to shell out serious cash toward real estate in 2019.
The tech titan recently announced that it plans to spend about $13 billion to expand its already massive footprint throughout the United States. The capital will largely be allocated toward data centers and offices across the U.S. as well as major expansions in 14 states.
“These new investments will give us the capacity to hire tens of thousands of employees, and enable the creation of more than 10,000 new construction jobs in Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Virginia,” said Google CEO Sundar Pichai. With this new investment, Google will now have a home in 24 total states, including data centers in 13 communities. 2019 marks the second year in a row we’ll be growing faster outside of the Bay Area than in it.”
The huge expansion efforts will enable the company to invest in more communities and enhance its services, Pichai said. In 2017, Google made a commitment to reach 100 percent renewable energy for its global operations, including its data centers that it plans to build in 2019.
The real estate investments throughout the Midwest, Northeast and South will likely create tens of thousands of construction jobs across Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Google currently employs more than 94,000 people around the world.
Google’s Midwest Plans
Google plans to continue its expansion in Chicago and is developing new data centers in Ohio and Nebraska. The company’s Wisconsin office will be moving into a larger space, Google said. In November, Google opened a Detriot office in the space where the Detroit Red Wings play.
Google’s Plans in the South
Google Virginia workforce will double in 2019, as the company continues its office space and data center construction. Google’s Georgia workforce also will double, the company said. Data centers in Oklahoma and South Carolina will also increase the states’ respective headcount, and it’s developing a new office and data center in Texas.
Google’s Plans in the Northeast
Thanks to big developments over the last decade, Massachusetts is now one of Google’s largest sales and engineering communities outside of the Bay Area. Google plans to build new office space in Massachusetts, as well as at its Google Hudson Square campus in New York.
Google’s Plans in the West
Google will be opening its first data center in Nevada in 2019 and plans to expand its Washington State office. In addition to its ongoing investments in the Bay Area, Google will continue with the redevelopment of the Westside Pavillion, and the Spruce Goose Hangar in the Los Angeles area.
